Repertoire Martenot

The Federation of Martenot Artistic Teachings, the Cité de la musique-Philharmonie de Paris, the Paris National Conservatory of Music and Dance, and the Grand Paris Seine Ouest Territorial Public Establishment are delighted to announce a collaborative project focusing on documentary resources related to ondes Martenot.

Emerging from ongoing discussions between partners, this project has been carefully developed over the past two years. The music museum houses an extensive collection, particularly concerning the organology of ondes Martenot, with a significant portion donated by Jean-Louis Martenot. The Hector Berlioz media library holds a substantial collection of music scores, more than half of which remain unpublished to date. This collection has been progressively enriched through donations from Jeanne Loriod, Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, Pascale Rousse-Lacordaire, Jean-Louis Martenot, and Nathalie Forget. The media library of the Boulogne-Billancourt Regional Conservatory also contains numerous unpublished works, having benefited from a significant donation by Françoise Deslogères.

The cooperation aims to:

  • Identify, catalogue, and locate existing resources;
  • Structure and preserve information related to ondes Martenot sources (musical, scientific, organological, and historical) by consolidating and harmonizing data;
  • Facilitate access to information sources and resources (musical, scientific, organological, and historical) related to ondes Martenot while respecting intellectual property rights, with a particular focus on musicians, musicologists, and researchers.

Developing a comprehensive repertoire of musical works for ondes Martenot is a long-term endeavour that can only succeed through collaboration and shared knowledge. With this vision, the project initiators aim to create a dynamic, evolving, and interactive platform to document the working group’s progress and showcase remarkable pieces from partner institutions.

Access to Works

Identifying, preserving, and making works from library collections available is crucial to understanding the repertoire, though it represents just one step for those seeking to revive 20th-century musical works. These works are protected by copyright. While access is permitted, copying and public performance require written authorization from rights holders. Partner institutions cannot identify rights holders, so the responsibility falls on the individual to conduct necessary research, obtain required permission for copying unpublished documents and secure authorizations for public performances or obtain permission from the relevant publisher for published works.

Cité de la musique – Philharmonie de Paris

The Cité de la Musique — Philharmonie de Paris is a French industrial and commercial public body whose mission is to undertake activities aimed at developing musical life. As part of this organization, the Musée de la Musique is dedicated to promoting musical knowledge and heritage conservation. It conserves, acquires and presents works (instruments, art works, tools, archives) relating to instrument manufacturing and the history of the composition, performance and dissemination of music. Its collection includes ondes Martenot, some of which are on display in the museum’s galleries, as well as a large archive, most of which was donated by the family of the famous inventor. A description of this collection is available online, with some digitized documents freely accessible on the Philharmonie’s online archive website.

CNSMDP – The Hector Berlioz Media Library

Founded in 1795, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) is France’s leading public institution devoted to the transmission of the musical and choreographic arts. Maurice Martenot began teaching the ondes Martenot at this institution in 1947. Jeanne Loriod, Valérie Hartmann-Claverie and now Nathalie Forget have followed in his footsteps. The Hector Berlioz multimedia library holds 300,000 documents: music scores, books, methods, periodicals, documentary files, CDs, DVDs and microgroove discs. The collection of ondes Martenot music, which includes over a thousand scores, has been built up thanks to the successive contributions of Jeanne Loriod, Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, Pascale Rousse-Lacordaire, Jean-Louis Martenot and Nathalie Forget.

FEAM – the Federation of Martenot Artistic Teachings

The FEAM (Fédération des Enseignements Artistiques Martenot) is a French non-profit association (’Association loi 1901’) which brings together the various Martenot teachings: relaxation, piano, musical training, plastic arts and the ondes Martenot.

The five branches were created by Maurice Martenot (musician and inventor) and his sisters, Madeleine (pianist) and Ginette (ondist, composer and plastic artist) at the École d’Art Martenot, the Martenot School of Art. The Martenot method is a multidisciplinary teaching method, ranging from the sensory to the technical side. Through relaxation, music and plastic arts, everyone—no matter how old they are, or whether they are a beginner or a professional—can develop their potential. Martenot teachers consider themselves to be “Educators through Art”, as their primary aim is the development of the individual.

“Liberate, open up, respect life, whilst teaching techniques”.

The Federation of Martenot Artistic Teachings advocates this humanist philosophy and brings together member associations (music, plastic arts, active relaxation and ondes Martenot), a scientific committee, active members, benefactors and supporters, with approximately 500 affiliated members. Almost every branch has its own association, members, organization and specific professional training. The ondes Martenot instrument, the plastic arts and musical training all have a presence outside France.
